Student Spotlight on Ivan Dominguez Fall 2006

Read about Ivan Dominguez, one of Sixth College's amazing students.

Ivan Dominguez

Name: Ivan Dominguez

Third year, Sixth College

Hometown: Oxnard, California

Interests: I'm pretty into music. In my free time, I'll either play the drums, guitar, or sing. I'm into the recording aspect of music as well. Being the Sound Engineer for KSDT, I've got a lot more background into audio equipment and engineering. I also like to go running. It really helps to be able to go out and run 2-3 miles when I'm super stressed out. It helps me relax.

Favorites:

  • Music: Right now it really depends on my mood. Sometimes metal, sometimes jazz.
  • Movies: Ones that are satirical and witty
  • Food: Mexican Food
  • Book: "Cien Años de Soledad" by Gabriel García Márquez

What's your current or intended major? Bioengineering

What do you want to do as an intended career after graduation? Saving the world

What student organizations or groups are you involved in? KSDT radio, SCTV, and SPHE. I joined KSDT radio when I was a freshmen. I saw a girl, Cecily, I had met my first night here at school standing outside the radio station. She said she really wanted to be a DJ. I saw drums in the lobby and realized I might get access to a drumset through the radio station. Later that week, I walked in and filled out an application to become a DJ.

My first show was 6 to 8 a.m. Mondays, or something like that. My only listener sometimes was my friend who went to school on the East Coast so it was around 9 to 11 a.m. her time (KSDT is only online).

After that I started going to the meetings and got trained by the Sound Engineer at the time, Andy. Andy taught me a lot about recordings and electronics. Being that we're both engineering majors, a lot of it made sense from physics classes and labs. This last year I focused a lot on recording. It got to the point where I had 20 units, 10 hours of work a week, and 10 hours of recording bands. The radio station is currently down due to construction and is expected to reopen winter quarter.

I also belong to SHPE, the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers. On admit day I saw their booth and became interested. I really wanted to participate this year to help out with their elementary school outreach program. I really want to give back and volunteer in the community and with SHPE we go to schools with largely underprivileged populations and help motivate them about science through fun and interactive science experiments.

I got involved with Sixth College TV this year, too. As an RA, we have to sign up for year-long committees, and I was interested in SCTV because it was most like my beloved radio station. This year is really the beginning of SCTV because now we can have live shows and such. I'm pretty excited because the future is bright!

What's your favorite memory of Sixth College or moment at Sixth College? One of the many good times was playing congas and reading poetry with the CAT professor, Peter John. He always rides around with a bubble sword attached to his musical bike.

Who are your role models/ heroes? This might sound stereotypical, but Martin Luther King, Jr., César Chavez, and Mother Teresa. I admire Chavez and King because they spoke out about the things they wanted to change about the world. I admire Mother Teresa because she gave herself to helping other people. I admire the sacrificing of one's own comforts in order to help those who lack the ability to help themselves.

If you could give one piece of advice to other Sixth College students, what would it be? Be open. Go to school, study hard, meet friends, but be open. You don't have to believe what someone else believes to understand where they're coming from. Also, take advantage of all the opportunities afforded to you because you never know where they might lead.

Why do you love Sixth College as much as you do?The people are awesome, and the residential facilities have a community feel. I love having trees and a canyon in lieu of monolithic stone buildings.
