Dear Parents,
Welcome to UC San Diego and especially to Sixth College. For new parents, I hope that your sons and daughters are settling in to the academic year at Sixth College. For parents of continuing students, I hope that your sons and daughters are getting the advice and support they need. If at any time, you find this not to be the case, please do not hesitate to get in touch.
This year is shaping up as a challenging one, as budget cuts force us to confront some tough realities. Staff and faculty have experienced furlough pay cuts ranging from 4-9% and staff time has been reduced accordingly. This means we have to find ways to deliver the services to our students as best as we can with reduced resources. Please be assured that we are doing everything in our power to minimize the impact of the cuts on your students.
On the positive side, UC San Diego remains one of the leading universities in the world, where your students have unparalleled academic opportunities, and we are confident that Sixth remains one of the friendliest, warmest, and more supportive of the colleges. Here at Sixth, we are excited about several new initiatives currently underway, including revamping the Culture, Art and Technology program (including hiring a new Director), and the development of our NASA-funded initiative in Climate, Technology and Culture. We have also re-invigorated our Honors program, and are continuing to partner with ArtPower! ti encourage our students to take advantage of the remarkable artistic performances brought to campus through this program. Sixth College is also working in partnership with the other colleges to support the campus-wide CURIE initiative to increase opportunities for undergraduates to engage with faculty in cutting-edge research. And of course, the generosity of our parents, and their support through the Parent Fund, goes a long way towards enabling us to provide these unique opportunities, particularly in the current constricted budget climate.
As always, I am happy to hear from you at Sixthprovost@ucsd.edu.
Kind regards,
Naomi Oreskes
