Academic Internship Program

The Academic Internship Program (AIP) serves students from all colleges and all undergraduate majors. Students planning to participate in the Academic Internship Program should apply at least one quarter before they want to be enrolled in the program. Students planning an out-of-town internship are encouraged to apply two quarters in advance.

Students can also participate in AIP Special Programs including UCDC: Internships in Washington, DC, UCCS: Internships in Sacramento, CA, and more.

For more information, visit the AIP website at aip.ucsd.edu or contact the AIP in the Virtual Advising Center.

AIP 197 can also be used to satisfy the Sixth College Experiential Learning Requirement when taken for 4 units.

Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society

Phi Beta Kappa is a prestigious national honor society for undergraduates in the liberal arts and sciences. The Phi Beta Kappa chapter at UC San Diego was chartered in 1977 and has initiated many thousands of exceptional UCSD students in the past 40+ years. Head to their Sigma Chapter page to learn more about Phi Beta Kappa at UC San Diego.

First Year and Senior Seminars

UC San Diego offers one-unit seminars to provide first year and upper division students with an opportunity to meet with faculty in a small class environment. They are taught by senior UC San Diego faculty and researchers and are limited to about 20 students. The seminars are taught by faculty in their fields of expertise and explore topics of intellectual importance. Students participate in critical discussion with a small group of peers and faculty. Topics differ every quarter.

Study Abroad

How can I study abroad?

Study Abroad UC San Diego offers several ways to study abroad. Please refer to their website for more details on the opportunities awaiting you.

How to use coursework from abroad towards GE requirements?

After you follow the steps required to initiate your study abroad experience, you will need to have paperwork signed by your major department, minor department (if applicable) and then by your college advisor, in that order.

To obtain the college advisor's signature, attend a drop-in advising session. During this session we can preliminarily discuss how the courses might apply towards the Sixth GE's.

It is the responsibility of the student to ensure the course is UC transferable and that the course does not duplicate previous coursework. If you have any questions, consult with advising before taking the course.

Conference Funding Support

Sixth College encourages students to be actively engaged in research as well as creative and artistic forms of expression.  This especially includes presentation at conferences of artistic or other projects and research papers either alone or jointly with other students or faculty mentors.

For 2023-24, Sixth College has up to $3,000 to distribute in support of student participation in conferences.  Sixth College students can apply for up to $250 in funding support per student.  These funds must be used to subsidize travel and registration expenses associated with attending conferences.

Sixth College students from all majors are eligible to apply. U.S. citizenship is not a requirement.  Conferences do not need to be in a student’s major field but must be connected to a student’s academic experience.

Applications must be submitted prior to the conference.  They may be emailed to sixthprovost@ucsd.edu or submitted in writing to the Sixth College Provost’s Office which will review the submissions.  The applicant must secure a brief letter of support from a UC San Diego faculty sponsor who should separately email the letter to sixthprovost@ucsd.edu

Funding will be awarded as reimbursement; receipts must be submitted to the Sixth College Provost’s Office after the applicant attends the conference.
