How to Choose a Major

  1. Scan through the major list.

    1. Highlight the majors that interest you.
  2. Research departments online.

    1. Research each major you consider a possibility by reading its department web site.
  3. Narrow down your list, then visit the departments and ask questions.

    1. Narrow your list down to five departments.
    2. Visit the departments and ask any questions you might have. Find out about major requirements and career opportunities, including salaries and benefits.
  4. Talk with others to help define your interests and goals.

    1. Talk about your academic interests with department faculty, college and department advisors, friends, and family.
    2. Visit the Career Services Center for guidance on your career goals and interests.
    3. Take the FOCUS assessment test, and discuss your scores with a career advisor.
  5. Narrow your list further, and take some classes.

    1. Narrow your list down to three departments.
    2. Take some classes from these departments. The more courses you sample, the better.
  6. Pick your major, and visit a department advisor.

    1. Now that you have taken some classes in these areas, narrow your choice to one major.
    2. Schedule an appointment with the department advisor to do long-term planning.
