Cultures, Communities, and Communication

CAT 125 Slavet

What would happen if a text intended for your best friend accidentally went to your mom? Or to your professor? Or to your future employer? In this version of CAT 125, we will explore how we communicate differently depending on the social context. We will explore the various social, professional, and civic communities to which we all belong. How do we present ourselves differently depending on the time and place? How do we speak differently with our friends or family, with classmates or professors and potential employers? How do different media affect what and how we communicate? Assignments will allow students to “translate” their interests and expertise for different audiences in digital, visual, oral, and/or textual formats.
