Ash Eliza Smith is an artist, musician and educator who has performed, exhibited, and led workshops internationally.  She incorporates strategies of play, speculation and the ethno-fictional into her work across the mediums of performance, photography, video, writing, sound, dance, theater, installations and games.

Smith grew up with fine storytellers in the foothills of the Appalachians in North Carolina.  Her own stories are often concerned with technology, science, the body, labor, excess, healing, memory, affect and trauma.  The notion of Play is a central concept and active goal of her work where investigations of self and place may be performed, mythologized, and re-imagined.

Smith has worked professionally as a producer, director and cinematographer for various bands and clients including VICE and The Creator's Project.  She has produced work in collaboration with Creative Time and MoMA in NYC and with the Nobel Peace Center in Oslo, Norway. Smith has worked with Schools Without Borders in Havana, Cuba and has participated in the Hemispheric Institute of Performance and Politics in NYC and Brazil.

Ash has received an MA from New York University, Tisch School of the Arts in Performance Studies and an MFA from UCSD's Visual Arts program.
