Coaching the Craft of Writing

Are you curious about why writing presents such a unique challenge to UCSD's population of high-achieving students? In this Practicum, you’ll work with the Associate Director for Writing of the Culture, Art, and Technology program to gain knowledge about how people learn to write, how to help people learn to write, and how to coach CAT students through effective writing practices. You will then put that knowledge to work by coaching students in Sixth College's very own Writing Studio. In the process, your reflections on your own writing and voice will be enriched. A requirement of the course is that you tutor CAT students for up to six hours per week. In addition, you will read some classic works in the field of composition studies and learn about the lower- and upper-division CAT courses being offered during the current quarter. You will also submit reflections each week and present a final research-based project with recommendations. At the end of the quarter, students who successfully complete the Practicum will be offered paid employment at the Writing Studio for the rest of the academic year.
