Arts6

Arts 6 is a unique and powerful connection between ArtPower! and Sixth College. The Arts 6 mission is to:

  • Explore the Sixth College Culture, Art and Technology academic theme through exposure to multidisciplinary and multimedia performances and personal interactions with world-renowned artists
  • Investigate ways in which art reveals and communicates what is significant and universal in contemporary society

To date, Sixth College students have participated in the following Arts 6 programs:

  • Random Dance, a cutting edge dance company, gave a lecture and demonstration for Sixth College students.
  • Through the Place Matters project, and in collaboration with the world-renowned dance ensemble Urban Bush Women, students explored issues of community and civic engagement through dance.
  • Students learned about the art form of dance by engaging with performers from the dynamic Brazilian dance troupe Grupo Corpo.
  • A violinist from the Kronos Quartet led a "music listening party" in the Sixth College Commuter Center. Over refreshments, the artist played and led discussion about music that shapes who he is as an artist.
  • The Hugo Wolf Quartet gave a wonderful house concert in the Sixth College Apartments Lodge and mingled with students at this catered event.
  • Hosted by Virginia State folklorist Jon Lohman, students listened to music and shared stories with musicians from the Crooked Road.
  • The artistic director for the modern dance company Compagnie Jant-Bi attended Sixth College Core Sequence (CAT) tracks to discuss the art form of dance and, specifically, how their work is a response to the Rwandan genocide. An "ArtTalk!" with the artists followed the performance.
  • Members of the Australian modern dance company Chunky Move joined Sixth and other UC San Diego community members for "Audacious: A Chunky Move Dance Party" following Chunky Move's performance, "I Want to Dance Better at Parties."
