Sixers Helping Sixers: Sixth College's New Student Mentoring Program

Sixers Helping Sixers, coordinated by the Sixth College Ambassadors and the College Administration, is a voluntary mentoring program for new Sixth College students. The goal of the program is to ensure that Sixth College is proactive in its goals of increasing new students’ sense of connectedness to the community and introducing new students to involvement opportunities. Incoming first-year and transfer students have the opportunity to apply for the program during Fall Orientation and Welcome Week. Each applicant is matched with a mentor (a continuing Sixth College student who has applied and been selected to serve as a mentor) based on preferences indicated on his/her application. Mentors are responsible for providing assistance and coordinating communication with his/her mentee for the entire academic year.

For New Students:

Interested in learning first-hand what life is really like at UCSD?  Participate in the Sixers Helping Sixers program and you will be matched with a mentor for the entire academic year! You can communicate and meet with your mentor as often as time permits. Meet-ups can be held anywhere that’s convenient for you and your mentor and discussions can be about anything you want. Sixers Helping Sixers will give you an informed and comfortable setting in which you can ask questions or just simply talk to an understanding peer.

As a Mentee, you:
• Learn a lot from an experienced Sixth College student
• Develop a connection to Sixth College and UCSD
• Establish a network of people, information, and opportunities
• Explore opportunities available to you and take advantage of them
• Develop the skills and confidence necessary to make the most of your college experience
• Will make new friends and have tons of fun!

Interested? Download the new student application or pick one up on Move-in Day, during Orientation, Welcome Week, or in the Sixth College hub, 2nd floor of Pepper Canyon Hall!  Applications can be submitted in the hub and will be accepted until Friday, September 25, 2009 at 4p!  Questions?  Please contact Jenelle Dean, Coordinator of Student Activities, jmdean@ucsd.edu, 858-822-3511.
