Practicum FAQ

Can I take my Practicum course as pass/no pass?

You are allowed to take your Practicum course as pass/no pass as long as you are not also using the class for any of your major requirements, since major departments typically require that all coursework be taken for a letter grade. You must also make sure that taking the class as pass/no pass will not cause you to exceed the 25% pass/no pass unit maximum, meaning that no more than a quarter of your total units can be taken as pass/no pass.

When will my degree audit be updated with my Practicum credit?

Any Practicum project for which a proposal must be submitted has to be manually entered into the degree audit system. These updates are done after all grades are finalized at the end of the quarter, so you can expect to see your Practicum requirement cleared on your degree audit during the week after final exams.

Can I get Practicum credit for a project I did if I never submitted a proposal?

In order to receive Practicum credit for a special study project or study abroad program, you must submit a Practicum proposal by Friday of Week 8 of the quarter before you participate in it. We are unfortunately not able to accept work previously done but not proposed for the Practicum as we do not allow any retroactive credit.

Which options require a proposal?

When should I submit my proposal?

How do I take CAT 124 for my Practicum?

Students must request departmental approval through the Enrollment Authorization System in order to enroll in CAT 124.

Can I get Practicum credit for a class I’m taking for a different requirement?

You are allowed to overlap the Practicum with your major, minor, or university requirements, but not with other general education requirements for Sixth College. Any class included on the Practicum departmental course list will automatically clear your Practicum as well as any other requirements it satisfies, unless your major or minor department does not allow you to overlap your coursework with other requirements.

Can I take a class from the departmental course list even if it’s not for my major?

You can take any class from the Practicum departmental course list that you meet the prerequisites for, even if it is not in your major department. You are not restricted to your own field when choosing a Practicum project to complete.

Do I need to submit a proposal for a preapproved departmental course?

If you are taking a class from the Practicum departmental course list, you will not need to submit a Practicum proposal in order to use that course for your Practicum. All you will need to do is successfully pass the class and the requirement will be automatically cleared on your degree audit.

Can I get Practicum credit for my internship?

You can use an off-campus internship to fulfill your Practicum requirement if you are able to receive academic credit for your internship work. The Academic Internship Program allows students to receive course credit for internships that meet their eligibility criteria by enrolling in AIP 197, and can also help students apply for internships if they have not already found one on their own. If you take AIP 197 for at least four units, it will automatically satisfy your Practicum.

Can I take a 198 or 199 course for my Practicum?

Special studies like a 198 or 199 course can be used to satisfy the Practicum if they meet all of the Practicum eligibility criteria. You will need to submit a Practicum proposal by Friday of Week 8 of the quarter before you participate in your special study project. You will also need to have a Special Studies Course Contract signed by your faculty advisor, and submit it with your Practicum proposal.

Can I fulfill my Practicum while studying abroad?

If you would like to study abroad to fulfill your Practicum, you will need to take a class that involves the hands-on, experiential learning required by the Practicum. If you find a course that has that component, you will need to obtain a syllabus for it and submit it with your Practicum proposal by Friday of Week 8 of the quarter before you go abroad in order to ensure that you receive Practicum credit for your study abroad coursework.
