Syllabus: CAT3_SP12_Anderson_Syllabus.pdf

This course is designed as an interdisciplinary study of public space through various forms of textual production. For the first half of the course, students will be expected to leave the space of the classroom, library, and archive to seek out public texts, which may include public memorials, everyday performances, social interactions, graffiti and tagging, music and sound, public art, architectural remnants, public parks and preserves – and to write about what they find. For the second half of the course, students will design and produce their own “social texts.”

Because CAT3 is a writing course, students will be expected to write throughout the quarter in a variety of modes and formats. As one of the few writing-intensive courses offered on campus, CAT3 is intended to be supportive of students with a wide range of writing experience and abilities; students will thus be expected to engage creatively and rigorously not only with their own writing, but also with their classmates' work.
