Experiential Learning Requirement Advisory Committee
Background:
The Sixth College Academic Plan dated May 14, 2001, as subsequently approved by the UCSD Academic Senate, does not specifically call for an Experiential Learning Requirement Advisory Committee. However, in 2004, the Sixth College Executive Committee recommended that a special Experiential Learning Requirement Committee should be established to assure the academic and intellectual integrity of the experiential learning requirement program. This has been the informal policy of Sixth College since that time.
At this point, the Executive Committee formally recognizes the establishment of the Experiential Learning Requirement Advisory Committee, with the guidelines below.
Composition:
Five faculty members, preferably one from each of the divisions involved in undergraduate education: Arts and Humanities, Biological Sciences, Jacobs School of Engineering, Physical Sciences, and Social Sciences; ex officio members: Provost of Sixth College, Dean of Academic Advising, Director of Academic Programs, Associate Director of Experiential Learning, and Student Representative (to be named by Sixth College Student Council). One of the faculty representatives will serve as the chair of the committee.
Members shall be chosen by the Provost in consultation with the Director of Academic Programs, the Associate Director of Experiential Learning, and the Chair of the Executive Committee. Members will typically serve for three years, and may be appointed for additional terms if appropriate.
Role of Committee:
The Committee shall advise the Provost, the Director of Academic Programs, and the Associate Director of Experiential Learning on all matters regarding the experiential learning requirement.
The Committee shall advise the Associate Director of Experiential Learning in the decision-making process.
The Committee shall review petitions and non-traditional, non-typical experiential learning requirement proposals as requested by the Associate Director of Experiential Learning.
The Committee shall participate in the identification of long- and short-term projects.
The Committee shall participate in the recruitment of faculty.
The Committee shall review and analyze assessment and evaluation data collected to assess the effectiveness and efficacy of the experiential learning requirement.
