FAQs & Policies

At UC San Diego, we believe you will find living on campus is an integral part of your education. As a result of your community living experience, we hope that you will develop a concern and respect for others; make responsible choices and decisions about a lifestyle which suits you best; share your academic, social, and cultural experience with other students; and learn to live peacefully in close quarters with a diverse group of people. We encourage you to work toward developing a positive involvement in your community, based on your rights and responsibilities as a resident living on campus.

Please be aware that as part of your housing contract, everyone who chooses to live in our residence communities must abide by the rules and regulations of UCSD, including, but not limited to, the UC San Diego Principles of Community, the UCSD RESNET Acceptable Use Policy, all applicable local, state, and federal laws, and the Housing and Residence Life policies outlined below. All of these guidelines are here to establish a safe and secure living environment and to support your success as a UCSD student. Any student who anticipates or observes a potential violation of policy is expected to immediately remove themselves from the environment in which the violation may occur. One's presence during any violation of University or Housing policy ultimately condones, supports, and/or encourages the behavior or potential violation of policy.

It is important to realize that students living in a group environment affect each other's lives in many ways. We strongly believe that one's actions demonstrate one's commitment to respecting differences. In addition, we will not accept ignorance, humor, anger, alcohol or substance abuse as an excuse, reason, or rationale for behavior. Certain shared responsibilities such as mutual cooperation, inclusion, and respect are integral to any successful group living situation. It also means accepting personal responsibility for how your everyday actions affect others living with you as roommates and neighbors. Establishing a positive and supportive residence environment means each individual must make occasional adjustments in personal habits, attitudes, and beliefs. Successful on-campus living, whether in the residence halls or apartments, means exercising your rights while recognizing your responsibilities in respecting the equally legitimate rights of the other members in your community.

Housing Contract, Assignments, Roommates, Room Change, & Important Housing Dates

The Housing Contract officially ends 24 hours after your student's final spring quarter exam or by Saturday, June 14, 2025 at 3P, whichever comes first.  Please mark your calendars and keep this in mind throughout the academic year as you plan your departure.  For more information, please view the HDH Undergrad Housing website or view this UC San Diego Undergraduate Housing Contract (Sample)

For more important dates, refer to this document:  Housing Calendar 2024-2025

Sixth College Residences will remain open and available for our residents through fall, winter, and spring breaks and the shared facilities in their apartments or floor lounges may be used to cook during this time. There will likely be an HDH Dining location open for limited hours during the breaks.

 Choosing Roommates:

First-year students, are able to REQUEST a roommate in early summer. Because of the complexity of housing assignments, realistically, you will most likely end up with an “automatic allocation", or an automatically chosen roommate, suite mate, or apartment mate.  We encourage you to be flexible and open to living with a variety of folks from many backgrounds---it's all part of the college educational experience.

When your continuing student housing process begins, you will be able to form roommate / apartment mate groups and choose the group with whom you would like to live if you are offered a Housing Contract for your 2nd year.

Housing Assignments:

Generally, the application period for returning students eligible for a Housing Contract begins in winter quarter.  The incoming/ new student application period is usually late spring / early summer.  Living-Learning Community (LLC) applications briefly proceed each of these periods.

Changing a room assignment is a measure of last resort.

Your Resident Assistant will help you to construct and maintain a Living-Space Agreement at the beginning of each year and when any new member joins your living space.  This is a requirement of your Housing Contract and we encourage you to be thorough and honest when creating the document.  This document will be used when/if conflict arises in your living space. Should you desire a room switch, please utilize the Housing Portal to be placed on the Room Change Interest List. Depending on the housing demand, you may be placed on a waitlist for your preference. Please note, any changes to room assignments is based on availability. Submitting a room change request does not guarantee that you will be offered a room change.  See "Interpersonal Conflict & Mediation Process" below for more information.

Policies: Student Conduct Procedures, Residence Life Community Standards, and Posting Policy

Check out the Student Conduct Procedures, including the Housing & Residence Life Community Standards, on the SAGE website.  This includes everything from acceptable appliances to quiet hours to emergency expectations.  By accepting admission to UC San Diego and signing a Housing Contract, you are accountable for all of the rules and regulations associated with being a student resident.  "I didn't know that 'x' was a rule" does not exempt you from the rule's application.

Postings of any kind are not currently allowed in Sixth College nor Sixth College Residential Life at NTPLLN (including doors, windows, and columns).  We are currently updating our posting policy.  We anticipate installing digital signage equipment, which will allow campus departments and Registered Student Organizations to submit advertising for events.  For questions, please contact the Sixth College Dean of Student Affairs Office at (858) 822-5933 or at SixthSA@ucsd.edu.

Interpersonal Conflict & Mediation Process

Restorative Justice the Triton Way:  Resident Conflict Resolution Process

Living in a community means that your actions affect others. Respect for differences is essential to a positive living environment, and behaviors such as ignorance, humor, anger, or substance use do not excuse misconduct. Successful group living relies on cooperation, inclusion, respect, and balancing your responsibilities with your rights.  Here are the steps we follow in our resident conflict resolution process:

1. Living Space Agreement:

By policy (i.e., Residence Life Community Standards, "Living Space Agreement"), all residents in single undergraduate housing are required to complete a Living Space Agreement with their roommates and/or apartment/suite mates within the first four weeks of moving in. This agreement facilitates discussion and compromise on individual preferences. In case of conflict, the agreement must be reviewed and revised with the help of a Resident Assistant (RA).  An updated agreement is required whenever there is a change in occupancy.

2. Direct Communication:

Conflicts must first be addressed directly and in-person with the involved parties. If unsure how to have this conversation, seek advice from your RA.  However, please note that they will not directly intervene at this stage

3. Involving the RA:

If the issue persists after a reasonable adjustment period (e.g., a week), bring it to your RA’s attention. They will direct you to submit a report to the Center for Student Accountability, Growth, and Education (SAGE), which will be reviewed by Student Affairs professionals.  This report cannot be anonymous, but reporters are protected by the University's retaliation policies.  Specifically, the UC San Diego Student Conduct Procedures, provide protections for students who report violations. It explicitly prohibits retaliation against students who report misconduct, participate in investigations, or act as witnesses in student conduct proceedings. This policy is designed to encourage students to report violations without fear of retribution.

If a case is referred back to the RA by SAGE or a Residence Life Professional, a mediated discussion will be scheduled within 10 business days based on the academic and/or documented work schedules of all of those involved.  Failure to attend this meeting may result in a hold being placed on your student account and/or further referral to SAGE.

4. Further Action:

If the conflict continues, the process in step 3 will be repeated, potentially involving escalation to a Residence Life Professional.

Statement on Student Room Assignments and Conduct Process

We are committed to ensuring a safe and supportive living environment for all students. It is important to understand that room assignments will not be altered based solely on allegations or disagreements between students. Any concerns regarding conflicts or policy violations must go through the appropriate mediation and/or student conduct process. Decisions regarding room changes or other actions will only be made after a thorough and fair process has taken place. We ask all students to respect this process, as it ensures that all parties are treated equitably and fairly.

Statement on Parent / Guardian Involvement with Interpersonal Conflict Among Residents

At UC San Diego, we believe in empowering our students to take responsibility for their own educational and residential experiences. While we understand that parents / guardians want to support their students, it is important to note that, under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and our University Housing Contract, the relationship is directly with the student as the contract holder and that their educational records are private.

We encourage students to advocate for themselves and address any concerns directly with the appropriate university offices.  This is an essential part of their development as independent adults. Parents or guardians can provide guidance and support, but we respectfully request that students handle communications and problem-solving on their own. This approach not only complies with legal requirements but also helps students develop the skills they need to succeed in both their academic and personal lives.

Room Changes:

Due to limited space and campus density, room changes are a measure of last resort. Students can join a room change list via their Housing Portal historically after Week 3 of fall quarter.  Please note that emergency moves based on a "safety" concern are reserved only for legitimate threats to life or limb as assessed by the UC San Diego Police Department in consultation with the Residence Life Office.  If a resident feels like their life or limb is at risk, they must dial 911 immediately.

Safety First:

In cases of immediate threat to health/safety, prioritize your safety. Move to a secure location, contact UC San Diego Campus Police at 858-534-4357, and then notify a staff member.
