What should I do if I can’t move out by June 14th at 3PM?

Fill out a “Late Stay Request Form” in the Undergraduate Housing Portal with your reasoning by Monday, June 2nd at 11:59PM.

*Note: This is a REQUEST that must be approved by Sixth ResLife to get a move-out exception.

Reasons for late stay exceptions are extremely narrow and don’t include inconvenience.  As parent/guardian travel issues are a common reason for which students request late stays, we encourage students to: 1) take things home on Memorial Day weekend; 2) arrange parent/guardian travel for the weekend before finals week to move out most of your belongings; or, 3) ship materials home.

What if I get locked out of my residence after Hospitality Information closes on Saturday, June 14th?

If you do not have an approved late stay request, your residence is automatically locked at 3PM on Saturday, June 14th.
  • Late stay students will need to get their ID cards re-encoded at the HI Desk during their open hours & pick up their late stay signage from the Sixth Residence Life Office by Wednesday, June 11th.
Call 858-534-4357 and UCPD will come unlock your space. All lockouts will be charged $25 for each lock out after HI closes.
  • You will have to wait for UCPD to let you in. That may take quite some time depending on their call volume and duties.

What happens if I stay past the move out deadline?

You will be charged a minimum of $75 as an improper checkout fee.

What are the steps I need to take to properly complete my move-out process?

Express Check-Out

  • Remove belongings from your residence and make sure it is cleaned
  • Complete the room inventory form
  • Drop off your key, not your ID, in the mailbox in the resident mailroom in Tapestry.
  • Complete your express check out form in your housing portal
If all of the steps above are not completed, you will be charged an improper check-out fee of $75.

Are any supplies available to help with move-out?

No. We do not provide assistance or equipment for move-out.

Can someone else turn in my keys for me?

No. All residents are responsible for turning in their own keys.

Is there somewhere on-campus where I can store my belongings.

No. UC San Diego has NO summer storage. Residents should look off-campus for sites if needed.

Do I have to clean my space?

Yes.  You can purchase cleaning supplies at the on-campus Target, some at the Sixth Market, or order from Amazon to do so.

How clean should my space be?

All belongings removed, all trash and recycling thrown out, surfaces wiped down, and floors cleaned.

RAs will be checking the cleanliness of your space during your scheduled move-out time.

Who’s responsible for cleaning the common spaces?

All contracted students sharing that suite/apartment (e.g., all students are expected to share the responsibility of cleaning the common-use spaces interior to their suite or apartment)

Shared spaces must be cleaned by those in your suite or apartment.  Otherwise, each resident in the suite will be charged an improper move-out fee of $75.

RAs will be checking the cleanliness of the common space during your scheduled move-out time.

What if my suitemates, roommates, or apartment mates leave trash behind in the common area?

You are contracted to that shared space so if no one claims the trash or items left behind, all of you will share the charge, and an additional improper check out fee may be applied on top of being charged for HDHs labor to clean the area.

I forgot to turn in my key and moved out already, can I mail it back?

No.  You will be charged $65 per missing key, and a possible improper check-out charge, to your student account.

I forgot some items in my space and I moved out already, can I come back and retrieve them?

No. Once you move out and complete the check-out process, you are not allowed back in. It is essential to collect ALL of your belongings prior to leaving.

Any personal items left behind will be inventoried, bagged, and stored by HDH Custodial.  This may take up to 2 weeks following closing.  After that time, you will have up to 90 days after your move-out date to claim your property. Contact sixthrlstaff@ucsd.edu to arrange a time to come collect them.

What should I do if I think I have been improperly charged for damages or an improper check-out fee?

Unless you already submitted a fix it request, or reported the damage to hall staff BEFORE you turned in your keys, HDH can charge you for the damage. All damages are charged at HDH’s discretion and complaints or appeals can be directed to hdhbilling@ucsd.edu

What if there's a damage and I’m unsure if I may be charged for it or not?

When in doubt, file a fix it request! Unless the damage is extensive, expensive, dangerous or unreasonable, in most cases, HDH will not charge you ONLY IF you submit requests PRIOR to you checking out.

What if there’s a family emergency such as a funeral, I’m in a car accident or medical emergency during move out, and cannot meet deadlines?

Contact our office IMMEDIATELY at 858-822-5268. We can work with you to find a solution.

What if I receive mail during the summer?

  1. You need to make sure to update your forwarding address in TritonLink and to forward your mail online at usps.com. Any mail delivered after June 14th at 3pm will be forwarded, or returned to sender if you do not have a forwarding address listed in TritonLink.
*Please remember, however, Student Mail Services DOES NOT send mail to international addresses.
