General Questions

Where can I get a copy of my transcript?

Official transcripts are available through the Registrar's Office. See the How to Request a Transcript info page for more information.

What should I do if my degree audit is not correct?

For errors listed under the "Major Requirements" column contact your major department.

For errors listed under the "College Requirements" or "University Requirements" use the "Ask a Question" tab in the Virtual Advising Center (VAC) to send a message describing the problem to Sixth College. We will review your message and your Degree Audit and respond to you within a timely manner.

I took classes at another college over the summer, how do I get that information to UCSD?

After you have completed the courses, you will need to request that the college send an official transcript to the UCSD Admissions Office.

Grades transferred in will give you units, but only courses taken at another UC will be calculated into your UCSD GPA, see How to Transfer Courses (Undergrads) for more information.

What are some things I should be doing each year to make satisfactory progress towards my degree requirements?

Enrollment Questions

What is two-pass enrollment?

Two pass enrollment is a process where students are allowed to enroll in classes in two separate passes. This process is designed to allow students to more equitably register for classes.

Two Pass System has more detailed information and an enrollment tutorial video.

How do I know what I need to enroll in during my booking time?

Students have many options to choose from when it comes to what classes to take during their time at UC San Diego. There are many resources available to help students create their academic plan. We recommend reviewing resources for long-term planning, following the steps to create your own plan, and meeting with major and college advisors.

What is part-time study?

  • To qualify for part-time study, you must meet the criteria and take 10 units or less for reduced fees.
  •  To obtain part-time study, students must apply with the "Undergraduate Part-time Study Application" on the Part-Time Study info page.
  • Applications for part-time study must be submitted by Friday of week two of the quarter via the Part Time E-Form.

General Education Requirements

Can a course I take for general education also count towards my major or minor requirements?

Sixth College allows overlap between courses taken for major or minor requirements and Sixth College GE requirements.

Can I take courses at a community college to satisfy General Education requirements?

Yes, you can take courses at a community college to satisfy some GE requirements. We encourage you to use ASSIST.org when searching for UC transferable courses. It is the responsibility of the student to make sure the course is UC transferable and satisfies the appropriate GE area. For more information, contact Sixth Academic Advising at vac.ucsd.edu.

What are the Sixth College Experiential Learning requirement and the CAT 125 requirement?

These are the two upper division GEs at Sixth. All Sixth students must complete both the Sixth College Experiential Learning Requirement and CAT 125. CAT 125 is Sixth College's upper division writing class. For detailed information regarding CAT 125, see the CAT 125 page on our website. For information about Experiential Learning and course options, see the Experiential Learning Requirement page on our website.

Major or Minor Questions

How do I declare a new major?

Prior to declaring your major/minor online, we encourage you to meet with a Department Advisor for details on the requirements. Utilize the resources and follow the steps on How to Declare or Change a Major (Undergraduates).

How do I declare a minor?

The How to Declare a Minor page is a good place to review general minor information. If you are an incoming student starting this Fall, you will be able to declare a Minor once you are enrolled in Fall courses.

Where can I get information on my major?

Most majors have websites with information on the major. Departments also offer academic advising. Please contact your major department with specific questions related to your major. You can contact your major using the Ask a question tab in VAC. You can view a list of majors at UCSD on the UC San Diego website.

I would like to double major, how do I do that?

First review the How to Declare a Double Major info page. Make a long term quarter by quarter plan to map out all required courses. To request to add the double major, you must complete a Double Major Petition form. Fill that out and have it signed (electronically) by both of your majors, sequentially. To submit, email Sixth College advising (sixthadvising@ucsd.edu) with a copy of: your signed double major petition form, your quarter by quarter academic plan, and your statement of purpose.

University Policy Questions

What is the deadline for dropping a class without a "W"?

The university deadline for dropping classes without a "W" is Friday of week 4. Friday of week 6 is the deadline to drop classes with a "W". The deadlines are always listed on Enrollment and Registration Calendars.

Can I add a class after the second week deadline?

The deadline to add a class is Friday of the 2nd week of the quarter. If you are trying to add a class after the 2nd week, you will need to contact the department offering the course. You will need to submit a TEA request but requests to add classes after the deadline are not guaranteed. We do not suggest this unless you have been attending the course from the start of the quarter.

Can I take a course for P/NP (Pass/No Pass)?

Courses taken to satisfy GE's may be taken P/NP if the course allows the grading option and as long as it is not required for your major.

Major or minor requirements: Most if not all major and minor courses must be taken for a letter grade. Check with your major or minor department for more information.

The University allows no more than 25% of your UCSD courses to be taken as P/NP.

The deadline to change your grading option is Friday of week 6. Make sure to check Enrollment and Registration Calendars.

What does it mean to take a "W" in a class?

A "W" on the transcript stands for "withdrawal". If you drop a class by the end of Week 4, it will not appear on your transcript.

If you drop a class after the end of Week 4, it will appear on your transcript with a "W" grade. A student may receive a maximum of one “W” per course, per Academic Senate Regulation 500, Section F-3.

You are not permitted to drop a class after Week 6.

What does it mean to take an "Incomplete" and how can I request an Incomplete?

If there are circumstances beyond your control that prevent you from completing a class, an incomplete may be requested. You must meet the eligibility requirements and confirm with the course instructor whether an incomplete is appropriate.

The deadline for submitting a request to your instructor for an incomplete shall be no later than the first working day after final examination week.

In order to make up and remove the incomplete, you must complete your work by the date given by your instructor, which can be no later than the last day of the next quarter's finals.

More info is outlined on the How to Request/ Remove an Incomplete page.

When can I repeat a course and how does repeating courses affect my grades?

In general, you may repeat a course for which you received a "D", "F" or "NP". If you receive a grade of "D" or "F" in a sequential course, you MUST repeat the course before continuing in the sequence.

A course in which a grade of "D" or "F" has been received cannot be repeated on a P/NP basis.

Refer to the webpage How To Repeat a Class for more details on the repeat policy.

How do I withdraw from ALL my classes this quarter?

You will not be able to drop all of your classes using TSS. If you need to drop all of your classes, you must submit an Undergraduate Request for Withdrawal form online.

What does it mean to be on academic notice and/or be subject to disqualification?

Academic notice indicates that an undergraduate student has a term or cumulative GPA of less than 2.0. If a student is on academic notice for two consecutive terms, or receives a term or cumulative GPA of less than 1.5, the student is subject to disqualification. More information on how to meet the terms of academic notice and progress towards good academic standing can be found at Back on Track.

Graduation Questions

I will complete all my college, major, and university requirements soon. When and how can I apply to graduate?

Please first review the graduating senior checklist. It is highly recommended that you conduct a graduation check with your major(s), minor(s) and college.

How many units do I need in order to participate in the commencement ceremony?

In order to participate in the commencement ceremony, students must complete a minimum of 135 units.  For more information and to register, please refer to commencement.ucsd.edu.

What is the difference between graduating and participating in commencement?

Graduating means to earn a degree. Students are eligible to graduate once they have satisfied all major, college, and university requirements including filing to graduate. To apply to graduate, you must file a graduation application or Degree and Diploma Application (DDA) at degree.ucsd.edu. You should file your DDA for the last quarter you plan to take courses which can be any quarter of the year.

Participating in Commencement means to partake in the optional celebration ceremony in June. Students can participate in the commencement ceremony if they have earned 135 units by the end of Winter quarter. Participating in commencement is not the equivalent of graduating. Participating in the ceremony does not ensure or indicate completion of degree. Diplomas are not awarded at the ceremony.

Can I walk in the commencement ceremony if I will be finishing requirements during the Summer or Fall?

Yes, students with at least 135 units (at the end of the Winter quarter) may participate in the commencement ceremony if they register by the deadline.  For more information and to register, please refer to commencement.ucsd.edu. Participating in the ceremony does not ensure or indicate completion of degree. Diplomas are not awarded at the ceremony. You should file a DDA for a quarter you plan to complete degree requirements. For more information and to register, please refer to commencement.ucsd.edu.
