Engaging San Diego: Taking Local Action to Address Global Issues

Spring 2023

In Spring 2023, Sixth College launched a new CAT 124 course, Engaging San Diego in Global Issues, aimed at giving students first-hand experience in civic engagement and activism. Working in groups, students used the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals to identify a global-local issue afflicting the San Diego region and then created social impact campaigns to help address these issues. In the end, the students successfully executed five unique campaigns tackling a range of social issues.

Engaging San Diego

  • Hop on Board | A campaign to enhance support for improved public transportation (SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities)

  • Compassion in Action | A campaign aimed at spreading awareness about the mental health challenges of those experiencing homelessness (SDG 3: Good Health and Wellbeing)

  • Houses for Homies | A campaign seeking to connect people with the resources needed to make homeownership a reality (SDG 1: No Poverty)

  • Fresh Connections | A campaign seeking connect people with local, sustainable food systems (SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production)

  • Find Your Way Home | A campaign to increase funding for homeless shelters in San Diego (SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities)

Final Reports

At the end of the quarter, each campaign created a final report to showcase their efforts and impact. Click the images below to check out these two final reports and learn more about their campaigns!
